BRITNEY SPEARS

Britney Spears

Britney Jean Spears born on December 2, 1981 in McComb, Mississippi, and raised in Kentwood, Loisiana. At age 3, she started attending dance lessons in her hometown and was selected to perform as a solo artist at the annual recital. During her childhood, she also attended gymnastics and voice lessons, and won many state-level competitions and children's talent shows. Spears made her local stage debut at age 5, singing "What Child Is This?" at her kindergarten graduation. At age 8, Spears and her mother Lynne traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for an audition in the 1990s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club. Casting director Matt Casella rejected her for being too young to join the series at the time, but introduced her to Nancy Carson, a New York City talent agent. Carson was impressed with Spears's vocals and suggested enrolling her at the Professional Performing Arts School; shortly after, Lynne and her daughters moved to a sublet apartment in New York. Spears was hired for her first professional role as the understudy for the lead role of Tina Denmark in the Off-Broadway musical Ruthless!. She also appeared as a contestant on the popular television show Star Search and was cast in a number of commercials. In December 1992, she was finally cast in The Mickey Mouse Club, but returned to Kentwood after the show was canceled. She enrolled at Parklane Academy in McComb, Mississippi.

In June 1997, Spears was in talks with manager Lou Pearlman to join the female pop group Innosense. Lynne asked family friend and entertainment lawyer Larry Rudolph for his opinion and submitted a tape of Spears singing over a Whitney Houston karaoke song along with some pictures. Rudolph decided he wanted to pitch her to record labels. He sent Spears an unused song of Toni Braxton; she rehearsed for a week and recorded her vocals in a studio with a sound engineer. Spears traveled to New York with the demo and met with executives from four labels, returning to Kentwood the same day. Three of the labels rejected her. Two weeks later, executives from Jive Records returned calls to Rudolph. She then sang Houston's "I Have Nothing" for the executives, and got signed to the label. They appointed her to work with producer Eric Foster White for a month. After hearing the recorded material, president Clive Calder ordered a full album. She flew to Cheiron Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, where half of the album was recorded from March to April 1998, with producers Max Martin, Denniz Pop and Rami Yacoub, among others.

...BABY ONE MORE TIME

After Spears returned to the United States, she embarked on a shopping mall promotional tour to promote her debut album. Her show was a four song set and she was accompanied by two back up dancers. Her first concert tour followed, as an opening act for NSYNC.

On September 30, 1998, her debut single was released. ...Baby One More Time attained global success, reaching number one in every country it charted. Sold 500,000 copies on its first day, and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, topping the chart for two consecutive weeks. It also received numerous certifications around the world, and is one of the best-selling singles of all time, with over 10 million copies sold. An accompanying music video, portrays Spears as a student from a Catholic high school, who starts to daydream that she is singing and dancing around the school, while watching her love interest from afar. The music video was shot at Venice High School, the same school used to film the movie Grease on August 6, 7 and 8, 1998, in Los Angeles and was directed by Nigel Dick. The video's original setup was in high contrast to what eventually became the final product. The plan was to have the video in a cartoon-like environment, in a likely attempt to attract the audience of younger children. Spears was unhappy with this, and argued that she wanted her video to reflect the lives of her fans and wanted to set the video in a school. Spears pitched this idea to Dick, and further explained she wanted the video to have dance scenes. The original setting was scrapped and replaced with Spears's concept. Dick’s original idea for the wardrobe was jeans and a T-shirt, but during the wardrobe fitting Spears decided to change it for a schoolgirl outfit.

Alternative International Cover

The Album, was released on January 12, 1999. It debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was certified 2x Platinum by RIAA after a month. Worldwide, the album topped the charts in 15 countries and sold over 10 million copies in a year. It became the biggest selling album ever by a teenage artist. As of today, it has sold 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. It is also the best-selling first album by any artist ever.

Sometimes was released as the second single on April 30, 1999. The single achieved commercial success worldwide, reaching #1 in Belgium (Flanders), Netherlands and New Zealand, while peaking inside the top 5 in 4 countries. In the United States, "Sometimes" missed the top ten, peaking at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video for the song was directed by Nigel Dick. During rehearsals, on February 11, 1999, Spears injured her left knee and needed surgery. After recuperating the music video was shot on April 9–10, 1999 at Paradise Cove in Malibu, California. It was released on May 6, 1999 on MTV's Total Request Live.

The April 1999 cover of Rolling Stone featured Spears lying on her bed, covered with a bra, shorts and an open top. The American Family Association (AFA) referred to the shoot as "a disturbing mix of childhood innocence and adult sexuality" and called to "God-loving Americans to boycott stores selling Britney's albums." Spears responded to the outcry commenting, "What's the big deal? I have strong morals. [...] I'd do it again. I thought the pictures were fine. And I was tired of being compared to Debbie Gibson and all of this bubblegum pop all the time." Shortly before, Spears had announced publicly she would remain a virgin until marriage.

On June 28, 1999, Spears began her first headlining ...Baby One More Time Tour in North America, which was positively received by critics, who called Spears's performance "assured and energetic", but generated some controversy due to her racy outfits. Tommy Hilfiger was chosen as the tour sponsor. The show was divided into various segments, with each segment being followed by an interlude to the next segment, and it ended with an encore. The setlist consisted of songs from her debut album and several covers.

In May 1999, Max Martin and Spears went to the Battery Studios in New York City, New York to re-record the vocals of (You Drive Me) Crazy, due to the fact that a remixed version called "The Stop! Remix" was going to be included on the original motion picture soundtrack of the film Drive Me Crazy (1999). "The Stop! Remix" of the song was released as the third single on August 23, 1999. It was a commercial success, and peaked inside the top 10 on the singles charts of 17 countries. In the United Kingdom, it became Spears' third consecutive single to peak inside the top 5, while it reached #10 in the US' Hot 100, and peaked at #1 in Belgium (Wallonia). The music video was directed by Nigel Dick, and featured actors Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier.

Born to Make You Happy was released on December 6, 1999 as the fourth single, and received mixed reviews from music critics, who praised it for being an early classic and a proficient single, despite considering the song as entirely unremarkable like other ballads on the album. The song was commercially successful worldwide, peaking at #1 in Ireland, and reaching top 5 positions in Belgium, Europe, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. In the United Kingdom, it also peaked at #1, and is Spears' sixth best-selling single in the country. An accompanying music video was directed by Billie Woodruff, and portrays Spears dreaming that she is with her lover, while she sings and dances during the majority of the video.

From the Bottom of My Broken Heart was released on December 15, 1999 as the final single. The song also received mixed reviews, finding the song a classic hit and competent single, despite considering it as an unremarkable song that refers only to kissing. Achieved moderate success, peaking at #37 in Australia, and #23 in New Zealand. In the United States, the song reached #14 on Billboard Hot 100, and was later certified Platinum by RIAA on March 28, 2000, for selling over 1,000,000 physical units of the single. The music video, directed by Gregory Dark, was released on December 17, 1999.

OOPS! ...I DID IT AGAIN

Crazy 2k was the second concert tour by Britney. It was launched in support of the albums ...Baby One More Time and Oops!... I Did It Again. The tour was designed as a continuation of the ...Baby One More Time Tour and a prelude to the Oops!... I Did It Again Tour. It was sponsored by Got Milk? and Polaroid. During the tour, Spears was accused of lip synching, although she denied these claims. Combined with  ...Baby One More Time Tour, the tour had a total gross of $35 million.

On March 27, 2000 Oops!... I Did It Again was released by Jive Records as the lead single from the same tittled album. It received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who noted similarities to her debut single ...Baby One More Time. Commercially, the track peaked at #9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.  Internationally, the song peaked atop the charts of over 15 countries, including Australia, Italy, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Consequently, Oops!... I Did It Again has been recognized as being among Spears's signature songs. An accompanying music video was directed by Nigel Dick. It depicts Spears in Mars, where she addresses an astronaut who has fallen in love with her. She was dressed in a red latex catsuit, which was considered too provocative for Spears's then-juvenile image. The single sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

On May 16, 2000, her second album was realesed. Upon its release, the album received generally favorable reviews from music critics. It debuted at #1 in the US, selling 1.3 million copies, breaking the SoundScan record for the highest debut sales by any solo artist. The album also reached #1 in 13 other countries while peaking inside the top 5 positions in Australia, Finland, Japan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. It was her second album to receive a diamond certification from RIAA. The album sold over 25 million copies worldwide to date, making one of the best-selling albums of all time.

The next mounth Spears embarked on the Oops!... I Did It Again Tour. The show was more elaborate than her previous tour and included pyrotechnics and other special effects. Reviewers praised the tour, adding that "[the concert] proved that many [of her] criticisms are off-base observations from people who have never actually attended [her] shows". Concert promoters SFX Entertainment guaranteed Spears a minimum of $200,000 per show before the tour began, and many of the shows sold out in one day. The Oops!... I Did It Again World Tour grossed $52,143,517 with 1,452,014 million in attendance and became the second highest-grossing tour of the year by a solo artist.

The album's second single Lucky was released on August 8, 2000 and received positive response from critics, who considered it one of her best offerings from the album. Commercially, Lucky topped the charts of Austria, Europe, Sweden and Switzerland, while reaching #5 on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, Lucky only managed to peak at #23 on the Hot 100 chart. The "glittery" music video sees Britney as the narrator and an actress named Lucky, who is a melancholy movie star and shows her conflicted relationship to fame.

The third single Stronger was released on November 13, 2000 and became the album's second highest charting single in the United States, peaking at #11 on the Hot 100. In the UK, it reached #7 on the UK Singles Chart. Its music video sees Britney catching her boyfriend cheating on her at some futuristic, turntable club, driving off and getting in a wreck and singing in the rain, while the chair sequence in the video was inspired by Janet Jackson's video for "The Pleasure Principle".

On September 7, 2000, Spears performed at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Halfway through the performance, she ripped off her black suit to reveal a sequined flesh-colored bodysuit, followed by heavy dance routine. It is noted by critics as the moment that Spears showed signs of becoming a more provocative performer. Amidst media speculation, Spears confirmed she was dating NSYNC member Justin Timberlake.

And on January 8, 2001, Britney co-host the 28th Annual American Music Awards with LL Cool J. She also performed her hit Stronger.

Later that month, she performed at the Super Bowl halftime show with Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Nelly and Mary J. Blige. And in February 2001, Spears signed a $7–8 million promotional deal with Pepsi.

The final single Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know was released on March 5, 2001 and is one of her favorite tracks of her career. In the United States, the song performed well below expectations, failing to chart on the Hot 100 or the Top 40 Mainstream. However, the song attained success in Romania, reaching #1, and peaked inside the top 10 in Austria, Europe and Switzerland, while reaching #12 in the UK. The music video was considered too racy at the time, portraying Spears in love scenes with her fictional boyfriend, played by French model Brice Durand.

BRITNEY

On September 6, 2001, Britney premiered her new song at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards. The performance featured a number of exotic animals, including a white tiger and a live albino Burmese Python on her shoulders. The inclusion of the animals in the performance brought a great deal of criticism from animal rights organization PETA.

The day after she was a guess performer at The Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special, performing "The Way You Make Me Feel".

I'm a Slave 4 U was released as the album's lead single on September 24, 2001. It achieved commercial success, peaking inside the top 10 in almost every country that it charted on. However, the song peaked at #27 in Hot 100, being the lowest chart position of the single worldwide. A music video for the single, which was directed by Francis Lawrence, was released along with the single released. It features Spears dancing in a sauna. Is one of her most risqué, iconic and sexiest videos ever.

Her self-titled third studio album, Britney, was released on October 31, 2001. While on tour, she felt inspired by hip hop artists such as Jay-Z and The Neptunes and wanted to create a record with a funkier sound. Looking to transition from the teen pop styles of her earlier albums, Spears began to embrace a maturer sound. Its music incorporates elements of pop with dance-pop and R&B influences and occasionally dips into other genres as well like hip hop and rock; its lyrics address the subjects of reaching adulthood and sexuality. The album debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 745,000 copies. Its success made Spears the first female artist to have her first three albums debut atop the chart. And reached top 5 positions in Australia, the United Kingdom and mainland Europe and sold over 15 million copies worldwide.

To promote the album, Spears embarked on the Dream Within a Dream Tour, which began in November 2001. Concert West was chosen as a promoter after a much publicized battle with Clear Channel Entertainment. A portion of the tickets and merchandise was donated to the children affected by the September 11 attacks. The name of the tour was based on Edgar Allan Poe's poem of the same name, and the theme was Spears's coming of age and newfound independence. The performances were accompanied by many extravagant special effects – during the encore, there was a water screen that pumped two tons of water into the stage. Although critics argued that the innovations took attention away from the music, the tour was a commercial success, grossing $58,248,253 with 1,018,925 million in attendance.

A month later, Spears opened the 2001 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on December 4, performing on a stage inside the fountains of the Bellagio Hotel.

Overprotected served as the album's second single internationally on December 12, 2001, and third single in the United States in April 2002. While it did not perform well on the Billboard charts in the United States, Overprotected peaked at #22 in Canada, while reaching the top 5 in Italy, Romania, Sweden and United Kingdom. An accompanying music video, directed by Billie Woodruff, portrays Spears dancing inside an abandoned factory, while singing about being overprotected; the music video for "The Darkchild Remix", directed by Chris Applebaum, portrays Spears dancing and having fun with her friends.

Staggered to fit the varying release dates of Crossroads internationally, I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman was released as the theme song of the film and the third single for Britney in the US. The song charted at #2 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, an extension of the 25 songs that failed to make the Hot 100. It was met with more success internationally, peaked at #2 in the UK.

Days later, on February 15, 2002, Spears also landed her first starring role in Crossroads. Although the film was largely panned, some critics praised Spears's acting. Crossroads, which had a $12 million budget, went on to gross over $61.1 million worldwide.

Spears's cover of I Love Rock 'n' Roll was released as the fourth European single. Consequentially, the song did not chart in the US, but reached #13 on the UK Singles Chart.

A version of the song Boys, entitled the "The Co-Ed Remix" feauturing Pharrell Williams, was released as the sixth and final single from Britney on July 29, 2002. It peaked at #23 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, and reached #7 in the UK. The new version also served as the second single from the soundtrack of Austin Powers in Goldmember. While the song did not perform well on the Billboard charts in the United States, it reached the top 10 on the Belgian charts and in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and charted in the top 20 in Australia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. The song's accompanying music video, directed by Dave Meyers, features Spears and Williams at a party.

Her career success was highlighted by Forbes in 2002, as Spears was ranked the world's most powerful celebrity. With the conclusion of the Dream Within a Dream Tour in July 2002 and the end of her relationship with Justin Timberlake, Spears planned to take a six-month break from her career; however, she went back into the studio in November to record her new album. In December 2002, Timberlake released the song "Cry Me a River" as the second single from his solo debut album. The music video featured a Spears look-alike and fueled the rumors that she had been unfaithful to him.

IN THE ZONE

On August 27, 2003, Spears opened the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards performing a medley of "Like a Virgin/Hollywood" with Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott. The performance started with Spears appearing on stage on top of a giant wedding cake while wearing a wedding gown and veil; she sang the first few lines of "Like a Virgin" before Aguilera appeared from behind the cake and joined her. Madonna then emerged from the cake wearing a black coat and a hat and started singing "Hollywood" before proceededing to kiss Spears and Aguilera on the lips. Missy Elliott came out from a wedding chapel to sing her song "Work It" halfway through the performance. The kiss generated strong reaction from the media. The performance was listed by Blender magazine as one of the twenty-five sexiest music moments on television history. MTV listed the performance as the number-one opening moment in the history of the MTV Video Music Awards.

A week later she also performed her new song for the first time at the NFL Kickoff Live. She sported shoulder-length blond hair and was dressed in black football pants, a black-and-white referee halter top and boots from Reebok. The performance segued into a medley of ...Baby One More Time and I'm a Slave 4 U, which included pyrotechnics. Her outfit was later auctioned off to benefit the Britney Spears Foundation.

Me Against the Music was released on October 14, 2003, by Jive Records, as the lead single of In the Zone. It features Madonna as a vocal guess. During rehearsals for the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, Spears played Madonna the track and asked her to do the song with her. Me Against the Music contains influences of hip hop and usage of funk guitars. Spears and Madonna trade lines during the verses, and Madonna sings the bridge. Lyrically, the song talks about battling the music and the pleasures of letting go on the dancefloor.  The song was a commercial success, peaking atop of the charts in countries such as Australia, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland and Spain, as well as the European Hot 100 Singles. It also peaked at #2 in Canada, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom, and inside the top 5 in many other nations. The accompanying music video shows Spears and Madonna playing opposites in a nightclub. A cat-and-mouse chase ensues, and Spears finds Madonna in the end, only for the latter to disappear before they kiss. The video received positive reviews from critics, who noted it as symbolic of the sexual roles between the women.

The album was released on November 18, 2003, by Jive Records. Its music incorporates dance, house, trip hop and hip hop styles with instrumentation from guitars, drums, synthesizers, strings, and Middle Eastern musical instruments. Its themes range from love, dancing, empowerment, sex and masturbation. In the Zone received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who complimented its mix of different styles and Spears's songwriting, but criticized her vocals for being distant and processed. In the Zone sold over 609,000 copies on the first week in the United States and debuted at the top of the charts. It also debuted at the top of the charts in France and the top ten in Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands. In the United States, she became the first female artist to have 4 consecutive number-one albums. It was the eighth best selling album of 2003 and as since sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

In January 2004, Spears married childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander at The Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The marriage was annulled 55 hours later, stating that Spears "lacked understanding of her actions".

On January 12, 2004, Toxic was released as the album's second single. After trying to choose between (I Got That) Boom Boom and Outrageous, Spears selected Toxic instead. The song received positive reviews from critics. Toxic attained worldwide success, reaching the top 5 in 15 countries, while topping the charts in Australia, Canada, Hungary, Norway and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it became her first single to peak inside the top 10 in almost 4 years. The accompanying music video for the song portrays Spears as a secret agent in the search of a vial of green liquid. After she steals it, she enters an apartment and poisons her unfaithful boyfriend. The video also includes interspersed scenes of Spears naked with diamonds over her body and is Spears's most expensive music video to date, at a cost of $1 million. Toxic won Spears her first Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording, and its often referred to as one of her defining songs.

On January 24, 2004, Spears opened the 2004 NRJ Music Awards with a performance of Toxic.

During this time she appears in another Pepsi Commercial called Gladiators, along with P!nk, Beyoncé and Enrique Iglesias!

In March 2004, she embarked on The Onyx Hotel Tour in support of the album. The show was majorly inspired by Broadway musicals and films by Joel Schumacher and Tim Burton. Critics appreciated the tour as a "theatrical extravaganza", comparing it to Madonna shows such as The Girlie Show World Tour. The tour was marketed to a more mature audience than her previous shows, resulting in slower ticket sales. Tour merchandise sold $30 million in total, making Spears the highest grossing female artist. It was cancelled after the second leg when Spears hurt her knee during a music video shoot. The Onyx Hotel Tour grossed $35,269,850.

Everytime was the third single released from the album, on May 17, 2004. It received positive appreciation from contemporary critics. Everytime was a commercial success, peaking inside the top 5 in most countries, while reaching the top of the charts in Australia, Hungary, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The music video portrays Spears as a star hounded by paparazzi, who drowns in her bathtub when she starts bleeding from a wound in her head. In the hospital, doctors fail to resuscitate her while a child is born in the next room, implying she reeincarnated. The original treatment would have had Spears killing herself from a drug overdose, but the plot was removed after it received criticism by several organizations, who perceived it as a glamorization of suicide.

Outrageous was the fourth and last single from the album, released on July 13, 2004. The song was finally chosen as a single after it was selected as the theme song for the 2004 film Catwoman. Outrageous received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised its funky sound, noting its influence from Michael and Janet Jackson, while others deemed it as "forgettable". The song only charted in the United States, entering many of Billboard 's component charts and peaking at #79 on the Hot 100. The music video was being shot in New York City in June 2004, when Spears hurt her knee and had to undergo arthroscopic surgery. The video was canceled, as well as The Onyx Hotel Tour and the feature in the Catwoman soundtrack.

GREATEST HITS: MY PREROGATIVE

During 2004, Spears became involved in the Kabbalah Centre through her friendship with Madonna. In July 2004, Spears became engaged to American dancer Kevin Federline, whom she had met three months before. The romance received intense attention from the media, since Federline had recently broken up with actress Shar Jackson, who was still pregnant with their second child at the time. The stages of their relationship were chronicled in Spears's first reality show Britney & Kevin: Chaotic. They held a wedding ceremony on September 18, 2004, but were not legally married until three weeks later on October 6 due to a delay finalizing the couple's prenuptial agreement.

Shortly after, she released her first fragrance with Elizabeth Arden, Curious, which broke the company's first-week gross for a perfume.

On September 21, 2004 Spears's cover version of Bobby Brown's My Prerogative was released as the lead single from her first greatest hits compilation. It failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 but reached success throughout Europe, peaking at #1 in Finland, Ireland, Italy and Norway, #2 in Spain and #3 in UK, Belgium (Flanders and Wallonia), Denmark and Germany. It also reached top 10 positions in Autralia, Austria, Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The music video for the song was filmed in August 2004 at The Paramour Mansion in Silver Lake, Los Angeles and was directed by Jake Nava. According to Spears's mother Lynne, the video was "about capturing gorgeous close-ups and very subtle movement" since Spears could not do any choreography due to her knee injury at the "Outrageous" music video shoot. She also described the video as "an element of old Hollywood glamour and mystery".

On November 8, 2004 her first greatest hits compilation album, Greatest Hits: My Prerogative, was released. The compilation was released in two different formats, a standard edition and a limited edition containing a bonus disc with remixes. A compilation DVD of the same name was released to accompany the audio versions. The album includes three new tracks, a cover of Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative", "Do Somethin'" and "I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)". Critics gave Greatest Hits: My Prerogative mixed reviews. Some felt that it was an accurate portrayal of Spears as the defining figure of American pop culture, while others stated that she did not have enough material for a compilation and also deemed it as premature. Greatest Hits: My Prerogative debuted at the top of the charts in Ireland and Japan, and the top 10 in other fourteen countries, including Australia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. It has sold 6 million copies worldwide.

Do Somethin' was released as the second single from the album. Originally, the song was never intended to be released as a single. Spears, however, wanted to shoot a music video
for it, and had to convince her record company. It was then released on February 14, 2005 by Jive Records as the second single from the album worldwide except North America. The dance-pop song features usage of electric guitars, and its lyrics allude to having a good time and not caring about other people's judgement. Although the single was not released in the United States, it charted on many of Billboard's component charts due to digital downloads, managing to reach number 100 on the Hot 100. It was also successful worldwide, reaching top ten positions in countries such as Australia, Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom. By the end of 2005, "Do Somethin'" was one of the best-selling singles in Australia and Belgium that year. An accompanying music video, co-directed by Billie Woodruff and Spears, who is credited as her alter ego "Mona Lisa", portrays the singer and four female friends dancing and performing in a nightclub. The usage of a Louis Vuitton dashboard in the video resulted in a lawsuit against Jive Records, which ended with Louis Vuitton winning 80,000 EUR in damages. The video was also banned in all European TV channels.

From May 17 to June 14, 2005, an American reality television series called Britney and Kevin: Chaotic aired on UPN The series chronicles the couple's relationship from their courtship, engagement and wedding. A majority of the footage was originally shot for Spears' own reality series to document the European leg of The Onyx Hotel Tour in the spring of 2004. Spears fell and injured her left knee during the shooting of the music video for "Outrageous", causing the remainder of the tour and the series to be cancelled. Britney and Kevin: Chaotic was heavily criticized by critics, who considered the series to be career suicide for Spears. Critics noted Spears' excessive narcissism and criticized the themes of the series as being too explicit. The DVD release of Britney and Kevin: Chaotic included Spears' first extended play of the same name.

Someday (I Will Understand) was released on 2006, as the sole single from Spears' first EP, Britney & Kevin: Chaotic. Spears wrote the song two weeks before knowing she was
pregnant with her first child. A pop ballad, "Someday (I Will Understand)" lyrics refer to a feeling of empowerment as a pregnant woman. A remixed version of the song was included on the 2005 remix compilation, B in the Mix: The Remixes. "Someday (I Will Understand)" has received mixed reviews from music critics. A few reviewers considered it as a lesson on the singer's history and a "tear-jerker" ballad, while others considered it a non-savable "flop single". The song reached the top 10 in Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland and also charted in a number of European countries. An accompanying music video, directed by Michael Haussman, premiered on the finale of Britney & Kevin: Chaotic. Entirely shot in black-and-white, the music video features Spears as a pregnant woman and portrays a transformation of her character. Contemporary critics noted the video as a departure from Spears' previous music videos.

On September 14, 2005, Spears gave birth to her first child, Sean Preston.

And on the day after her second fragrance, Fantasy was released.

B in the Mix: The Remixes was released on November 22, 2005, by Jive Records and is the first remix album by Britney Spears. BLACKOUT

On Jan. 5, 2007 In a message on her Web site, Spears addresses her future, her new album and the closing of one of her biggest fan sites. The pop star, who has taken heat for her late night escapades, said:
"The media has criticized my every move and printed a skewed perception of who I really am as a human being. Behind every decision I have made in my public life, there always seems to be an apparent contradiction. I have come to terms with that, which is why I usually don't pay much attention to it."
Spears went on to call the last few years "very enlightening" and discussed a new album, which is in the works.

On Feb. 16, 2007 Spears is seen at a hair salon in Tarzana, Calif., shaving her head. Later, she was seen at a tattoo parlor getting inked on her hip and wrist and atacked the paparazzi with an umbrella. The hair purportedly clipped from her head went for sale on eBay. Earlier in the day, the pop star checked out of the center less than a day after checking in voluntarily. It was the second time in a week that Spears entered a rehab facility and checked out before her first day was finished.

On March 20, 2007, after nearly a month of seclusion in a luxurious rehabilitation center, Britney checks out of Promises Malibu Alcohol and Drug Rehab Treatment Facility "after successfully completing their program," her manager, Larry Rudolph, says in a statement released by Jive Records.

In May 2007, she produced a series of promotional concerts at House of Blues venues, titled The M+M's Tour, consisting of six brief shows at clubs in the United States. The show, which ran 12–16 minutes in length, featured Spears accompanied by four female back-up dancers performing choreographed dance numbers to shortened versions of five songs, including hits such as "...Baby One More Time" and "Toxic". During the performance of one song, a male audience member participated onstage. Spears' vocals during the performance were lip-synched. The shows received mixed reviews from critics and fans. Some said that Spears looked happy and in great shape, while others deemed the show as subpar.

On Aug. 9, 2007 Britney's ex, Kevin Federline, sues for primary physical custody of their two children, a source tells The ShowBuzz. The action comes less than two weeks after their divorce is finalized.

On Sept. 9, 2007 Britney Spears returns to the spotlight in a big way in Las Vegas, opening MTV's annual star studded Video Music Awards (VMAs) with a performance of her new single, "Gimme More". But, her performance provoked plenty of negative feedback; out-of-synch lip-synching, lethargic movements, a bit of paunch in place of her once-taut belly - all came under scrutiny. At times she just stopped singing altogether, as if even she knew nothing could save her performance.

During September, after a one-month relationship, Spears' management firm drops her. Her divorce lawyer also resigns. Spears is ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week, according to court documents in her custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline. The order was issued by a judge who required both parents to refrain from drinking and using drugs around their two young children and 12 hours before either cares for them. Only Spears was ordered to submit to testing.

On September 18, 2007, Gimme More was released by Jive Records as the lead single from Blackout. The song opens with an intro in which Spears says the phrase "It's Britney, bitch". It features racy lyrics, that, although they appear to be about dancing and sex, are actually about the media's fascination with Spears's private life. Musically, "Gimme More" is an uptempo dance-pop song with breathy vocals and influences from other genres, such as electro and funk. The song peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, becoming her fifth top ten hit and also her second highest-peaking single at the time. It also peaked at the top of the charts in Canada and Ireland, and reached top five positions in 14 countries. The accompanying music video premiered on October 5, 2007. It displayed Spears as a stripper and featured a break from Spears's highly choreographed music videos. It received mixed to negative reviews from critics, who panned Spears's pole dancing as well as the lack of storyline.

Blackout was released on October 25, 2007, by Jive Records and the Zomba Music Group. Blackout represents a musical departure from Spears' earlier work, featuring a foreboding and atmospheric tone in terms of musical and lyrical direction. She collaborated with producers including Danja, Bloodshy & Avant, Sean Garrett, and The Neptunes in several recording studios around the United States, including Spears' home in Los Angeles, with the intention of creating uptempo, high-energy music. Their efforts resulted in a primarily electropop, dance-pop, and R&B record, which sees additional influences from euro disco, dubstep, and funk. The lyrical themes revolve around fame, media scrutiny, sex, and clubbing.Upon its release, Blackout received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who complimented it as Spears' most progressive and consistent album. The album has appeared on many end-of-the-year and decade lists, including reader polls by Billboard and Rolling Stone; The Times named it as the fifth best pop album of the decade. Rolling Stone described it as one of the most influential albums in modern pop. In 2012, the album was added to the library and archives of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Blackout was originally scheduled to be released on November 13 in the United States, though it was ultimately rush-released after several unauthorized internet leaks. It was expected to debut at number one on the US Billboard 200, but debuted at #2 with first-week sales of 290,000 copies after a last-minute rule change. Consequently, Blackout is distinguished as Spears' first studio album not to debut in the number-one position in the United States, although it was later certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for exceeding one million shipments. The record charted in the top 10 of several national charts internationally, and has attained several certifications worldwide. Blackout had sold 4 million copies worldwide.

Piece of Me was released on November 27, 2007 by Jive Records as the second single from the album. The song was written and produced by Swedish producers Bloodshy & Avant and Klas Åhlund as a response to the media scrutiny and sensationalism of Spears' private life, which they had seen by working with her over the years. Piece of Me was the last song to be recorded for Blackout. The self-manifesto song's lyrics are written like a biography retelling her mishaps. Musically, Piece of Me is an electro song that runs through a down-tempo dance beat. Piece of Me has received general positive reviews, praising its production and defiant lyrics, while citing it as one of the highlights from Blackout. It was also commercially successful, peaking at #1 in Ireland and reaching top 10 positions in Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The music video, directed by Wayne Isham, portrayed Spears' life at the time and showed her with her friends disguising themselves in order to confuse the paparazzi. Isham's concept was to have Spears confidently parodying her situation. The video was nominated in three categories at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards and won all of them, including Video of the Year.

Break the Ice was released on March 4, 2008 by Jive Records as the third single from the album. Break the Ice was released after it was chosen by a poll on Spears's official website. Musically, Break the Ice is an electro-R&B song with influences of rave and crunk. The song opens with a choir and features synthesizers. Its lyrics deal with an attraction between two people. Break the Ice received positive reviews from music critics, who deemed it as a strong electronic track from the album. The song was a moderate success, reaching the top 10 in Belgium, Canada, Finland and Sweden and charting within the top 40 in Australia, New Zealand and many European countries. In the United States, the song reached number 43 on Billboard Hot 100, while peaking at number one on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart. An accompanying music video, directed by Robert Hales, was released on March 12, 2008. The anime-influenced animation video was based on the superheroine character of Spears's "Toxic" music video, and portrays her destroying a highly secured laboratory with several clones, including one of herself.
